Transport Accident Investigation Commission (TAIC)
Transport Accident Investigation Commission (TAIC)
Description
New Zealand's Transport Accident Investigation Commission (TAIC) is charged with determining the circumstances and causes of selected aviation, marine and rail accidents and incidents "with a view to avoiding similar occurrences in the future; rather than to ascribe blame to any person," according to the TAIC Act 1990, which established the commission and defined its functions, duties and powers. The TAIC was established to improve New Zealand's compliance with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Annex 13, Accident and Incident Investigation.
TAIC's mandate was extended to rail in 1992 and to maritime accidents in 1995.
The TAIC comprises four commissioners, supported by a chief executive and staff of approximately 30. The TAIC is an independent Crown entity.
