Captain John Monks has completed over 27 years in aviation and has combined flying and management roles for the last 16 years. Previous management roles have included leading the recruitment and training of pilots and developing pilot training strategy. As ‘Head of Aviation Safety, Risk and Compliance’ he is responsible for the completion of all significant aircraft accident and investigation management in BA and manages the oversight of third party airlines with which the organisation has commercial relationships. The role also encompasses accountability for the operators FDM programme and its use for contributing further to the hazard identification and risk management activities. Alongside the Flight Operations, Ground Operations and Engineering Directorates at British Airways he develops Safety Culture which includes the implementation of ‘Just culture’. His role also includes working collaboratively and influencing regulation with industry agencies and regulators. He has closely worked with ICAO in various fields including ‘Volcanic Ash and ‘Aircraft Tracking’, managing the diverse needs of States, politicians and Operators. He is also a member of the ICAO GASP SG. As a member of EASA’s Stakeholder Advisory Board he supports the direction of safety strategy and rulemaking within EASA. As Vice Chair of IATA’s Safety Group he develops IATA strategy in safety for IATA airlines globally. He also is holds the role of Specialist Advisor to the NATS Safety Review Committee, whose role is to monitor and review the effectiveness of safety performance for the NATS Board the UKs leading ATC service provider.
