Rudy Pont
Rudy is an A320 captain currently flying for Brussels Airlines. He chairs the Air Safety Committee for the Belgian Cockpit Association (BeCA) and jokingly compares his work to a ‘Pay-to-Fly’ scheme: “I pay membership in order to work for the pilot association, but the team and the cause are great. So, I am happy to do so.” Having a background in electro-mechanical engineering and with over 10 years safety experience as a deputy safety manager for Thomas Cook Airlines Belgium, his motto is “people are safety!” This explains his strong beliefs about Just Culture, Safety-II and Human Factors. It’s also the reason why he is an active member of the EUROCONTROL Just Culture Task Force and the ECA Flight Data working Group. Rudy is also IFALPA director for Belgium and concludes his MSc in Air Safety Management at City University of London with a final thesis on ‘Managing a pragmatic Just Culture implementation’. Since Belgium may be called the political laboratory of Europe, he is used looking for compromises. Therefore, he sees himself as somebody who builds bridges (his last name means ‘bridge’ in French); between management and employees, between aviation and healthcare, between the judiciary and authorities... In his opinion communication starts with understanding each other’s viewpoint. “Only then trust can grow.”
